Event 14 Recap

$500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

At a final table that featured many wild swings, it was a heads up grind that gave Arnuflo Vidal (New York, NY) the title over John Kostelac (Enola, PA). It took Vidal more than two hours to overcome a 2.5 to 1 chip deficit two-handed.

"It's fantastic," said Vidal who earned the trophy and the $28,225 first place prize. "I told my friends that I was going to hit a big one. This is the beginning," he said after his first career live tournament cash.

The pivotal hand came when Vidal held pocket 10s and hit a set against Kostelac's AQ in a double-up that gave him most of the chips.

"I got married to Ace-Queen," said Kostelac who earned $15,525 as runner-up. "I had to go with it. Heads up that's a pretty strong hand."

Adding insult to injury is that Kostelac was eliminated by A♠ Q after being left with 2 bb, but was fortunate to still be playing.

Kostelac was nearly on the rail when play was three-handed, but after being dominated by Mike Comar preflop A 10 to AK, he was given new life when a straight on the board chopped the pot.

Comar didn't recover and would up in third place.

Fourteen players returned for Day 2 with Arnuflo the chip leader, but relinquished the lead at the final table to Jin Ro who wound up in 4th place.  The lead changed hands many times as nobody could pull away.

194 players put a total buy-in of $97,000 as 18 players grabbed a piece of the prize pool.

Familiar names in the money included Event 4 runner-up Dr. Raul Munoz (12th), Borgata regular Robert Melo (15th) and 2011 Borgata Summer Poker Open Champion Tyng Low (17th).

Vidal was thrilled to win on Father's Day and will make a quick trip home to see his three daughters before returning to play in Day 1B of the Championship event.

"I have business to take care if I'm going to be here for four days," he said while clutching the Borgata trophy.

$28,225

Blinds 50k/100k/10k ante

The pivotal hand comes with John Kostelac raising the button to 300k and Arnuflo Vidal making the call.

Flop: J♣ 10 6

Vidal checks, Kostelac bets 400k and Vidal calls.

Turn: 4♠

Vidal moves all in for 650k and is at risk, Kostelac calls.

Kostelac A♠ Q♠ (gutshot straight draw)
Vidal: 10♠ 10 (set of 10s)

River 2

Vidal wins the hand and gets the double-up to 2.7 million, leaving Kostelac with just 200k.

A few hands later, Vidal uses A♠ Q for the winning cards against Kostelac's 7♣ 4♣ .

"I was able to chip up because he was playing pretty tight," says Vidal who earns $28,225, his first career live tournament cash. "I played aggressive and waited for the right spots. It's fantastic."

Vidal owns a grocery store in New York City and says he got a call from his kids, Michelle, Chanel and Melinda, on Father's Day.

He plans on making a quick trip home to set the store up for the week so he can return Monday to play in Day 1B of the Championship Event.

Event 14: 2nd Place - Kostelac

$500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

John Kostelac (Enola, PA)
$15,525

John Kostelac had the chip lead when heads up play began, but after Arnuflo Vidal doubled-up with pocket Aces and then hit a big hand with a set of 10s, Kostelac settles for second place.

"I got married to Ace-Queen," says Kostelac who had AQ against Kostelac's pocket 10s on the pivotal hand.  "I had to go with it. Heads up that's a pretty strong hand."

To add insult to injury, the hand that ultimately knocked Kostelac out was AQ when he was left with two big blinds.

Kostelac is in the construction industry and plays poker when he can. He earns $15,525 for his second place finish, his third career tournament cash, all at Borgata.

Championship: Free Rolling?

$2500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack Double Play NLH (Re-Entry)

Reina Representing Friends

Borgata online contest winner Tom Belasic (Cedar Grove, NJ) isn't the only person free-rolling in this event.  Of course it depends on your definition of free-rolling.

DJ Whorley (Washington, D.C.) just earned $2,823 for his 8th place finish in Event 14 and then jumped into Day 1A of the Championship event.  The price tag for that is $2,700 so he's covered there, but it doesn't account for the cost of his $560 entry into Event 14.

So Whorley is kind of free-rolling.

Then there's Frank Reina (Carteret, NJ) whose friends Steve and Giovanni financed his entry, but don't know a thing about poker.  "Their great guys," says Reina, "but there's a lot of pressure. All they know is that Aces are good."

We'll put Reina in the free-rolling category, but with strings attached.

Level 6 (150/300/50 ante) continues.

Jin had QJ.

    Event 14: Robert Railed

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Robert Melo (Queens, NY) - 15th Place
    $1,647

Melo loses coin-flip when his 6-6 pre-flop shove is run-down by Josh Palmer's (North Carolina) A-K.
Robert feels immediate pain as he watches the King fall in the window.

    Board ran: K-10-J-7-3

Melo has to tend to his son's dental needs and cannot play in the 2013 Borgata Summer Poker Open Championship.  Hit and run today in the amount of $1,647.

    Event 14: Trammell Trampled

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

     Quintin Trammell - 16th Place
    $1,411

End of the road for Quintin Trammell (Staten Island, NY) who just lost a race to Vidal Arnuflo (New York, NY).  Quintin jammed his short stack holding wired fives but was rundown by Arnuflo's A-K.

    Board: 7-A-2-9-K

Quintin is not playing in The Championship and has to head home tonight.

In 17th Place also for $1,411 was Tyng Low (Flushing, NY).

    Event 14: Bernie Bounced

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    Bernie Liberati - 18th Place
    $1,411

Bernie Liberati (Cherry Hill, NJ) is the first casualty of the final two tables.  He had hope coming in but his short stack couldn't survive.

Josh Palmer opened with 8-9 followed by Bernie blasting with A-K.

Palmer crushes a flop of 4-8-9 and sends "The Nicest Guy In The World" home with $1,411 for 18th Place.

Bernie played the bubble brilliantly.  He rode his short stack for what felt like an eternity and was rewarded for his patience and bubbleology.

Event 14: Final Two Tables Are Set

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    3. Bernie Liberati (Cherry Hill, NJ) - 25,000

    6. Paolo Nigris - 160,000

    8. Michael Comar (Manalapan, NJ) - 245,000
    9. Josh Palmer (North Carolina) - 155,000

So we don't end in the middle of a blind, play will end at approximately 1:30 AM when players will bag and tag for the night.

Michael Comar is looking for another trophy so he can have bookends.  Michale won a trophy Event for $20,000 in the 2013 Borgata Spring Poker Open.

2011 Summer WPT Boragta Champ Tyng Low (Flushing, NY) is alive and looking to add to his bankroll with a strong finish in Event 14.

    Event 14: In The Money

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Jin Ro (Scwell, NJ) Knocks Out Bubble

After an hour of hand-to-hand action, Jin Ro felts Robert Nicotra sending the remaining 18 Players into the green stuff.

Robert became the bubble when his AQ couldn't find one more heart after the flop vs. Fred Jafarzadeh's A-10 and Jin Ro's A-K.  All three players were all in pre-flop with Robert at risk with only 9,100.

    Borgata Bubble Board: 5♠ 9 3 2♠ 6

Jin was first to table his hand but did not feel too confident.  Once Robert flipped AQ in disgust, the rest of the field celebrated.

18th Place will receive $1,411.  Unfortunately for Robert Nicotra, he receives only a pat on the back.

Two-table re-draw is underway as remaining players take a twenty minute break.

Play resumes at 12:30 AM and continues until 2:00 AM.

    Event 14: Bubble Continues

    $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

45 minutes and counting as the bubble battle continues.

We came close as our two shortest stacks both shipped pre then both tabled A-K.

Short stacks continue to double-up with the best hand.

    This game of patience continues.

    We're now into Level 17 with blinds at 2500 / 5000 and 500 antes.
